St. Jude Children’s Home
is a residence for orphaned, abandoned, and disabled children, located in the Gulu Region of Northern Uganda. Their mission is to provide a loving environment where children have access to comprehensive care including education, health services as well as emotional and spiritual support.
In July 2009, The Mercy Project partnered to create the St. Jude Health Agreement which included establishing a permanent first aid clinic. The Mercy Project currently funds an on-site nurse, a nurse’s assistant, medical supplies, and emergency coverage; while also assisting in healthcare seminars.
The South Sudan Nurses and Midwives Association (SSNAMA) is the national professional association for nurses and midwives in South Sudan.
The Mercy Project and the Canadian Association of Midwives are partnering with the South Sudanese Association of Midwives to support the association in strengthening its service to members and the community.
In 2019, SSNAMA will be launching an income generating initiative to empower the SSNAMA chapters to raise funds to support their activities and members. We are fundraising $5,000 to support the small businesses (providing the initial inputs) of the SSNAMA Income Generating Project.

To our amazing supporters,
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of the Mercy Project. After 17 wonderful years, we have reached a point where we are no longer able to dedicate the time required to ensure the organization’s stability, maintenance, and the level of partnership that our beneficiaries deserve.
Founded in 2008 by 7 volunteers (Daniel L., Dan M., Jamie, Jen, Kasia, Meera, and Tara), the Mercy Project began with a modest goal: to raise funds to ensure continued access to essential health resources for babies, children, and community members of the Sport Outreach Institute in Koro, Gulu County, Uganda.
Since those early days, the organization has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to expand healthcare access for the children of St. Jude’s Children’s Home in Gulu, provide sustainable electricity to Paipir Elementary School in Pader, and support the livelihoods of nurses and midwives in South Sudan.
While we are deeply saddened to bring this chapter to a close, we are also incredibly proud of what we have achieved and how long this small initiative has endured. If you had told us in 2008 that we would still be active nearly two decades later, we probably wouldn’t have believed you.
As a long-time donor, we want to sincerely thank you for placing your trust in us. Your generosity has made a real difference, helping us sustain vital programs and strengthen the communities we all care about. We are proud to share that since our founding, over 95% of all donations received were delivered directly to the people and communities in need. Few organizations can make that claim, and it was only possible thanks to the countless volunteers who gave their time and energy over the years.
If you wish to continue supporting the St. Jude Children’s Home or Sports Outreach Ministry in Gulu, we warmly encourage you to consider donating to Social Promise, a U.S.-based charity that supports both St. Jude and Lacor Hospital in Gulu. For Sports Outreach, donations can be made directly through their website: https://www.sportsoutreach.net/give.
Please note that any active recurring donations to the Mercy Project will be canceled before the end of December.
From all of us who have lovingly supported this organization over the years, thank you for being part of this journey, and for helping us work toward a more just and equitable world.
With love and gratitude,
The Mercy Project Team
