Blog post #5: Return to Gulu

Author: Jamie Robinson, Mercy Project co-Founder and current Board Member

I just got back from Gulu a couple of weeks ago, and after being away for three years, the trip was much needed and very grounding.   While I was there I had the chance to meet with our TMP partners, and I wanted to send an update.

TMP’s main partner is the St. Jude’s Children’s Home and our contribution to them has really grown over the past few years. Aside from the regular clinic services, SJCH continues to prioritize the needs of children with disabilities, within the home and in the community through monthly outreach programs in 5 villages.  The program reaches people in remote areas, primarily children with epilepsy and cerebral palsy, in desperate need of expensive medications and basic health care support.

While I was in Gulu I had the opportunity to attend an outreach program with the St. Jude’s nurse (Aliga K. Brenda) in the village of Amuru.  I have to say, it was a truly moving and humbling experiences.  After 7 years of working on this project, and thinking about development from a variety of perspectives (primarily critical), few experiences have moved me as deeply.  Families travelled a great distance to attend- I saw a grandmother carrying twelve-year-old girl!  I also heard about the impact that these medications make on the children, some of whom are able to attend school for the first time as a result of this medications which prevent their seizures.

This trip really showed me how vital this work is, and how large the impact of our contribution.

As we look forward to the 8th year of the project, we will be facing exciting challenges and changes. This year, the St. DSC_0158 (640x428)Jude’s Clinic will become a registered health center, allowing our nursing team to provide better care (for example they will be able to prescribe a wider range of medications).  We also hope to contribute to the completion of the clinic at SOM, and to work with a new partner.

I am so proud of the Mercy Project, and of everyone at home and around the world who has and continues to support the amazing work of our partners in Gulu.

THANK YOU

To our amazing supporters,

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of the Mercy Project. After 17 wonderful years, we have reached a point where we are no longer able to dedicate the time required to ensure the organization’s stability, maintenance, and the level of partnership that our beneficiaries deserve.

Founded in 2008 by 7 volunteers (Daniel L., Dan M., Jamie, Jen, Kasia, Meera, and Tara), the Mercy Project began with a modest goal: to raise funds to ensure continued access to essential health resources for babies, children, and community members of the Sport Outreach Institute in Koro, Gulu County, Uganda.

Since those early days, the organization has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to expand healthcare access for the children of St. Jude’s Children’s Home in Gulu, provide sustainable electricity to Paipir Elementary School in Pader, and support the livelihoods of nurses and midwives in South Sudan.

While we are deeply saddened to bring this chapter to a close, we are also incredibly proud of what we have achieved and how long this small initiative has endured. If you had told us in 2008 that we would still be active nearly two decades later, we probably wouldn’t have believed you.

As a long-time donor, we want to sincerely thank you for placing your trust in us. Your generosity has made a real difference, helping us sustain vital programs and strengthen the communities we all care about. We are proud to share that since our founding, over 95% of all donations received were delivered directly to the people and communities in need. Few organizations can make that claim, and it was only possible thanks to the countless volunteers who gave their time and energy over the years.

If you wish to continue supporting the St. Jude Children’s Home or Sports Outreach Ministry in Gulu, we warmly encourage you to consider donating to Social Promise, a U.S.-based charity that supports both St. Jude and Lacor Hospital in Gulu. For Sports Outreach, donations can be made directly through their website: https://www.sportsoutreach.net/give.
Please note that any active recurring donations to the Mercy Project will be canceled before the end of December.

From all of us who have lovingly supported this organization over the years, thank you for being part of this journey, and for helping us work toward a more just and equitable world.

With love and gratitude,
The Mercy Project Team
