Blog Post #1

We have a new website!

It’s been six and a half years since we co-founded The Mercy Project. I can hardly believe it. It’s always so strange for me to imagine how much time has passed as I still think of ourselves as a club or group of friends that got together just to do something we loved. Now we’re a registered charity that has fundraised more than $50,000 and has two wonderful community partners.

Having a volunteer-run board is not an easy thing to do. We’ve been fortunate to have so much support along the way, whether it be through free office space (thanks CVAP!), designing our beautiful logo (Cameron North), or creating and maintaining a website pro-bono (Nick Leduc).

Six years in the making, we’ve decided to give Nick a bit of a break. E-mailing him every week with new requests wasn’t such an efficient way to get work done (although Nick never complained about our constant needs, not once) which meant we began the long process of trying to design a new website that was more user-friendly for as little money as possible.

And so – here we are! We have a website that is simple but informative about who we are, what the organization is all about, and how you can be a part of it. We’re hoping you like it and please let us know of any feedback that you’d like to share with us! We’re still learning and are pretty proud of our first steps into website autonomy!

So take a look around, enjoy the photos & videos, and keep checking this blog as we’ll be sharing updates and articles all related to our work, similar causes, and our TMP family. Thanks for supporting the work we do.

To our amazing supporters,

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of the Mercy Project. After 17 wonderful years, we have reached a point where we are no longer able to dedicate the time required to ensure the organization’s stability, maintenance, and the level of partnership that our beneficiaries deserve.

Founded in 2008 by 7 volunteers (Daniel L., Dan M., Jamie, Jen, Kasia, Meera, and Tara), the Mercy Project began with a modest goal: to raise funds to ensure continued access to essential health resources for babies, children, and community members of the Sport Outreach Institute in Koro, Gulu County, Uganda.

Since those early days, the organization has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to expand healthcare access for the children of St. Jude’s Children’s Home in Gulu, provide sustainable electricity to Paipir Elementary School in Pader, and support the livelihoods of nurses and midwives in South Sudan.

While we are deeply saddened to bring this chapter to a close, we are also incredibly proud of what we have achieved and how long this small initiative has endured. If you had told us in 2008 that we would still be active nearly two decades later, we probably wouldn’t have believed you.

As a long-time donor, we want to sincerely thank you for placing your trust in us. Your generosity has made a real difference, helping us sustain vital programs and strengthen the communities we all care about. We are proud to share that since our founding, over 95% of all donations received were delivered directly to the people and communities in need. Few organizations can make that claim, and it was only possible thanks to the countless volunteers who gave their time and energy over the years.

If you wish to continue supporting the St. Jude Children’s Home or Sports Outreach Ministry in Gulu, we warmly encourage you to consider donating to Social Promise, a U.S.-based charity that supports both St. Jude and Lacor Hospital in Gulu. For Sports Outreach, donations can be made directly through their website: https://www.sportsoutreach.net/give.
Please note that any active recurring donations to the Mercy Project will be canceled before the end of December.

From all of us who have lovingly supported this organization over the years, thank you for being part of this journey, and for helping us work toward a more just and equitable world.

With love and gratitude,
The Mercy Project Team
